How to verify your profile, fix suspensions, and stay visible in search.
Why Verification Matters More Than Ever
If you own a service business in Grand Rapids, you know how critical it is to show up when people search. For local contractors, plumbers, landscapers, or HVAC pros, most jobs start with a Google search. And your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the first thing people see.
But here is the truth: if your profile is not verified, you are invisible. You could be the best concrete company in Michigan, but if Google does not trust you enough to display your profile, customers will not find you.
We have seen this play out firsthand. A concrete contractor we worked with in Kent County had their GBP suspended after years of building reviews and photos. Overnight, the calls stopped. No map ranking, no local pack visibility. They went from averaging 50 calls a month to almost nothing. Once we helped them verify again and fix their suspensions, their call volume rebounded within weeks.
That is the power of verification.
Step 1: Start Your Verification
The first step is simple: claim or create your Google Business Profile. Fill in your name, category, service areas, and contact details. Once complete, Google will prompt you to verify.
Sounds easy, right? But this is where a lot of service businesses hit roadblocks.
For example, a concrete company in West Michigan used an old P.O. Box in their profile. Google rejected it because it did not match USPS records. Until we updated their listing to their actual headquarters, the verification would not go through.
Step 2: Choose Your Verification Method
Google decides which methods you can use based on your business type, history, and risk signals.
Options include:
- Postcard by Mail: Still the most common. A postcard with a code arrives in 5–14 days.
- Phone Call or Text: Instant for some businesses.
- Email Verification: Code sent to your business email.
- Video Verification: A live or recorded video proving your location, signage, or tools.
- Bulk Verification: For 10+ locations.
Here is the kicker: most contractors only get one or two options, and video is becoming more common. We recently helped a concrete team in Caledonia do a video verification. They walked around their shop, showed their branded trucks, their signage, and even their equipment. That one video was enough for Google to approve them within 24 hours.
Step 3: Troubleshoot Common Issues
Verification can be frustrating. Here are the most common issues we see:
No Postcard Arrives: This happens all the time. Make sure your address matches USPS exactly. Even “St.” vs. “Street” can cause problems.
Denied Verification: This usually means your name, address, or phone (NAP) is inconsistent across directories. If Yelp, BBB, and your GBP all have slightly different info, Google gets suspicious.
Video Rejected: Your video needs to clearly show proof: signage, workspace, and tools. If it is shaky or incomplete, Google will deny it.
We had a client in Rockford who tried three postcards and two videos before they called us. The problem? Their business name online was slightly different across profiles—sometimes “LLC,” sometimes not. Once we cleaned that up, their verification went through on the first try.
Step 4: Recovering From Suspension
Verification is not the only hurdle. Suspensions are just as common, and they are brutal.
A concrete contractor in Ottawa County lost their profile after Google flagged them for “misrepresentation.” They were not doing anything shady—just had two profiles for different service areas. Google saw that as spam and suspended both.
We stepped in, consolidated the profiles, cleaned up duplicates across directories, and filed a reinstatement request with proper documentation. Within two weeks, their main profile was live again, and calls started flowing.
Suspensions often happen when:
The good news is, suspensions can be fixed if you know the process.
Step 5: Stay Verified
Verification is not a one-and-done. Google can require re-verification anytime.
To avoid future issues:
We tell clients to treat their GBP like their digital storefront. If it looks alive, updated, and consistent, Google trusts it. If it looks abandoned or inconsistent, you risk suspension or invisibility.
Your Google Business Profile is the foundation of local SEO. Without verification, you are invisible. With it, you can show up for the searches that matter and earn calls every single week.
We have seen it firsthand—concrete contractors, HVAC pros, landscapers, and law firms across Michigan who were invisible one week and thriving the next after getting verified.
At WiseBear Creative, we specialize in helping service businesses claim, verify, and optimize their profiles so they stop losing leads.
